SINGAPORE: TAKING ENGINEERING EDUCATION TO THE NEXT LEVELSingapore – one of the leading countriesfor quality, transnational education in Asia, is an attractive choice for overseas education for international students. Engineering majors have a wide range of specialisations, offering diploma and undergraduate students a myriad of career opportunities worldwide. Indeed, job prospects in engineering are getting brighter and engineering graduates are highly sought after, feels DrThamYieng Wei the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS).

A dynamic Engineering sector in India

The Indian Engineering sector has witnessed a remarkable growth over the last few years driven by increased investments in infrastructure and industrial production. The engineering sector, being closely associated with the manufacturing and infrastructure sectors, is of strategic importance to India’s economy.

India on its quest to become a global superpower has made significant strides towards the development of its engineering sector, appointingan Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) as the apex body in charge of promotion of engineering goods, products and services from India. Spending on engineering services is projected to increase to US$ 1.1 trillion by 2020.

The capital goods & engineering turnover in India stood close to US$ 125.4 billion towards the end of 2016 – 2017. India exports its engineering goods mostly to the US and Europe, and now also Japan and South Korea, as well as Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh, which have recently emerged as major destinations for India’s engineering exports.

The engineering sector in India attracts immense interest from foreign players as it enjoys a comparative advantage in terms of manufacturing costs, technology and innovation. Coupled with favourable regulatory policies and growth in the manufacturing sector, foreign players have been encouraged to invest in India. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows into India’s miscellaneous mechanical and engineering industries stood at around US$3,296.07 millionbetween April 2000 to December 2016, according to data released by the Department of Industries Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

Why Singapore for an Engineering Education?

Local universities and Private Education Institutions (PEIs)in Singapore, alongside thegovernment provide numerous programmes and incentivesin promoting the field of engineering and developing talent for the industry. These measures include scholarships for local and international students to pursue higher education in engineering, new career paths for engineers, and a boost in the salaries of engineers as well as a clear career advancement roadmap.

Students from India can gain a quality, internationally accredited engineering degree in Singapore with top private education institutions.Just in April this year, Singapore was ranked No. 1 in all the test subjects of the Programme for International Student Assessment, ahead of school systems across Asia, Europe, Australasia and the Americas.

It may be a small country, but in higher education and research, Singapore is a big hitter. A whole series of global reports have recognized Singapore as a world leader in research and innovation over the past few decades. In recent years, it’s been ranked seventh in the 2015 INSEAD Global Innovation Index, third in IMD’s 2014 World Competitiveness Rankings and second in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report for 2014-15.

Within this context of global competitiveness and innovation, local universities andPEIs in Singapore are also gaining growing recognition in the global education market. Singapore’s two leading universities are now both ranked within the world’s top 15, and PEIs are offering quality internationally accredited academic programmesin partnership with top global universities. The city itself is ranked 14th in the QS Best Student Cities 2017, reflecting its combination of educational excellence, high quality of life, and diverse student community.

Engineering programmesoffered by local universities and PEIs provide a well-balanced combination of theory and practice, with well-equipped engineering labsand workshops, industry-standard machinery, and highly qualified and industry experienced teaching faculties.

An engineer’s training equips one to be a strategic systems thinker and a value creator. It also encompasses transferable skills like problem-solving, and numerical and analytical skills. These skills make engineers highly valued in non-engineering sectors too, opening career opportunities for them in finance and banking, even policy development.

.High-tech multinational companies based locally have leveraged the engineering talent base here. Seagate, a leader in storage solutions, has opened an R&D Centre for 500 researchers to focus on developing the next-generation 2.5-inch storage drives.Keppel Corporation, an offshore engineering company has established a corporate research laboratory with the aim to create new solutions while nurturing research engineers for the offshore industry. In addition, young engineering graduates are also increasingly drawn to joining or creating technology start-ups.

Such companies, including technology start-ups with their potential to grow globally, creates many rewarding career opportunities for young engineers willing to take up global challenges. Additionally, opportunities for engineering graduates will continue to grow as more investment is poured into research and more effort expended on technology commercialisation.

In a nutshell…

From a broader perspective, engineering helps make lives better. There’s no doubt that engineers play a crucial role in transforming the global economy and our society; and so, the right education and access to opportunitiescan set your ambitions to becoming a global engineer on the right path towards success.

Manipal Institute of Technology to take Personalization in Education One Step Forward

Nurturing the new age Engineering talent

Chennai, July 2017: ManipalInstitute of Technology, Manipal University, one of India’s premier engineering institute announced an enhanced curriculum for the academic year 2018. As pioneers in personalizing curriculum based on interest and aptitude, the institute aims to provide students a holistic learning experience.

In a general scenario, while selecting elective subjects students are given a limited choice of subjects that they can chose from. The University introduces a major change at regular intervals and the next one is scheduled to take place in 2018. With the curriculum revamp, students will be able to take up ‘Open Electives’ – subjects which are not essentially from the same area of specialization they have chosen as their main stream.

The University is continuously enhancing the curriculum to make it more relevant to the changing requirements in today’s work place. The revised curriculum allows students to select electives that they are passionate about, even if it does not fall under the scope of engineering.  An Engineering student can even chose to study journalism if it interests him and still manage to get credits.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. G K Prabhu, Director of MIT added Our industry is going through a tremendous overhaul and there is an increasing need for students to upskilland stay relevant in today’s workplace. As a world-class institution, we are taking up numerous initiatives to provide students the flexibility and freedom to follow their passion. With this curriculum change, our students can chose electives that are outside the program, for instance an Electronics and Communication branch student can study foreign languages or chose another engineering subject as an elective. This will help them earn the prescribed credits as well as explore multiple areas of interest”

The interdisciplinary nature of Manipal University adds to the feasibility of this syllabus advancement. The University is home to over 30 different institutions from Medicine and Hotel administration to Communications and Nursing. This makes it possible for an Engineering student to even take up journalism with easy accessto the highly recognized Communications School or even Culinary Arts at the Hotel Management institute, all under one campus.

“We place a lot of emphasis on providing students hands-on experience through student projects. Students who are working on a particular project can also chose it as their elective and gain credits. Every year our students work on various projects that are well received in several competitions, we hope to offer such major projects as open electives for studentsadded Dr. G K Prabhu.

Students who have opted for more open electives than they are required to, can convert them into a certificate course which will be a part of their final transcript as a minor specialization. Apart from this, students can also choose to pursue a semester in an approved college abroad and have the credits transferred. Similarly, students can also take online courses through the Coursera portal and get certificates from overseas universities offering such courses on the portal. These opportunities offer several advantages to the students, such as, bringing in an element of flexibility in curriculum, develop self-learning skills, encourageInternational student mobility and also improve their employability potential.

The University is also working at including off-beat courses like Music, Dance, Drama, Yoga and Yakshagana to their credit offering in the years to come. Through timely upgrades to the curriculum MIT is focused at providing students holistic education with a keen focus on practical knowledge and flexibility to choose their area of interes

Smartclass Educational Services Private Ltd., an education technology startup held its first edition of Smart Learning Schools Conclave at Hotel GRT Grand, T.Nagar in Chennai.

Smart Learning Schools Conclave is an initiative by Smartclass Educational to discuss key challenges and latest trends in the education space. The Conclave seeks to help schools identify, discuss and solve key issues facing them in imparting high quality education to prepare children for a new generation of skills. The School Conclave involves educationists, principals and school management from various city schools to discuss and find innovative solutions for the same. Over 50 principals of leading schools in Chennai attended the School Conclave whose theme was New Computational Thinking.

On the occasion, the school community of Chennai got a chance to witness Smartclass Educational’s latest offering – the CTI Lab. The 21st Century CTI Labs is a unique initiative by Smartclass Educational to enhance existing learning levels among students, making them future ready through a proprietary technology designed to teach children through the building blocks of computation.

Computational thinking provides school students with mental skills they can use to solve an array of problems that range from seeing situations in their entirety or as inter-connected parts or by breaking problems into smaller parts in order to solve them. Computational thinking also helps children to analyse and structure information better and understand how the technology and machines around them work. The aim of developing computational thinking among students is to arm them with the skills to design and program technology to solve challenges.

CTI Lab facilitates computational thinking, an important 21st century skill that children need to start developing as soon as they begin school. By starting young, children will be better prepared to thrive in a technology-filled world which is moving at a fast pace. Instead of only being passive technology users, they can become active inventors and innovators.

The CTI lab curriculum is based on Computational Thinking skills mapped to NCERT framework for Computer Literacy. This framework also includes Learner-centric activities for one Lab period as micro-learning nuggets that include 4-5 lab sessions per grade like Computer Science (Grade1-8), Robotics (Level 1-4) and Creating stories using creator (grade 2-4).

Speaking on the sidelines of the Smart Learning Conclave held in the city today, M.R.Krishnamoorthy, Senior Vice President, Smart Class education services Pvt. Ltd ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬said, “The aim of the Smart Learning Schools Conclave is to update schools and students with the latest creative modules and technologies for the future. The Smartclass CTI Lab is a concept-driven approach that strengthens a student’s analytical skills, problem-solving abilities and enables creative thinking that helps them pursue excellence in different fields. We are happy to introduce schools in Chennai to this future-ready educational tool and expect an exponential growth in its applications across schools in the region.”

Smartclass Educational Services Private Ltd., an education technology startup held its first edition of Smart Learning Schools Conclave at Hotel GRT Grand, T.Nagar in Chennai.VideoLink’s.

Also launched on the occasion was n-CAT, a customized diagnostic test for Indian students, brought to India by Smartclass Educational. n-CAT provides not just a score, but a detailed analysis of topic-wise conceptual understanding by students in class, tests the skill level(both knowledge & test-taking) required for high score and also helps in modifying teaching approach for each student to help overcome scoring gaps. It is an invaluable tool in hands of teachers.

With an aim to help them enhance infrastructure and facilities, smartclass Educational has tied up with Versura Shiksha, to provide educational loans to schools across India. Versura (Latin for loans) Shiksha is a leading organization providing loans to educational institutions.

Around 5000 schools across India are expected to participate in the first edition of Smartclass Educational’s Smart Learning School Conclaves. To be held across 80 Indian cities/towns from July to September 2017, the conclaves will cover all four regions of the country as well as the North East.

SRM AP, to be the first varsity in AP Capital Amaravati

Sri. N. Chandrababu Naidu inaugurates the campus announces  new courses with MIT and UC Berkeley

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu inaugurates SRM University, AP – Amravati. “I am sure within a span of five years, SRM University with 10,000 students would be a top ranked world class university, with multi stream research in the fields of engineering to management, liberal arts & humanities to law, medicine to health sciences to make Amaravati recognized by foreign countries as the best educational hub of the globe”, said Mr. Naidu.

In pursuit of developing this culture of excellence, SRM University AP – Amaravati has forged collaborations with the world’s best universities, MIT and UC Berkeley College of Engineering, U.S., launching new program with design, innovation, and entrepreneurship focus for the first time in India

SRM is working with MIT, U.S. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) for the design and development of their curriculum through the use of MITx courses. These courses will incorporate the concepts of hybrid learning by utilizing both traditional and technologically enabled teaching methods.

“SRM is embracing a contemporary method of learning for the digital world, not before seen in India. We are working with international universities to develop a progressive curriculum. We will emphasize application oriented learning via projects and lab courses rather than monologues that are the typical feature of our classrooms”, says Dr. P Sathyanarayanan, President of SRM University, AP – Amaravati. The faculty recruitment has followed a similar strategy with over 90% of the faculty having international academic exposure and all faculty members having PhDs from foreign universities, IITs or IISc.Around 30 faculty members have been appointed across different disciplines and over 20% of the faculty recruited are foreign nationals.

SRM has alsopartnered with UC Berkley College of Engineering, California, U.S., to enable bi-directional information exchange in the areas of engineering education. SRM will also be a global partner of the Jacob’s Institute for Design engineering and the Sutardja Centre for Entrepreneurship and Technology (SCET). This partnership would establish centers of design, innovation and entrepreneurship at SRM, which would embrace the study and practice of “technology-centric” innovation bringing together technical depth, design methodology, and a focus on societal impact. SRM students and faculty will be provided the opportunity to travel to UC Berkeley to imbibe these ideas.Every year, 20 undergraduate students will be given the opportunity to go to UC Berkeley for a semester to study engineering at Berkeley with a defined set of concurrent enrollment and bootcamp courses.

“We aim to bring a confluence of international ideas, technological innovation, and social impact, creating an ecosystem of meaningful creation originating at Amaravati and impacting the entire state, nation, and the world.”, says Dr. Sandip Tiwari, Cornell University, U.S., and newly appointed Vice Chancellor of SRM University, AP – Amaravati.

The university will also establish centres of Excellence in Renewable energy, Satellite technology, Internet of Things (IoTs), Blue Economy, Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning, Rolls Royce – SRM Corporate laboratory, Jal – Janak Rail energy, and CRISPR for pushing the frontiers of modern technology. “Semester abroad programs and company internships across the world would also be present to create innovators and global leaders.” says Dr. Narayan Rao, Pro – Vice Chancellor of SRM AP.

B.Tech programs in CSE, ECE, EEE, and Mechanical Engineering are being offered from the academic year 2017-18. To attract meritorious students, 50% tuition waiver is being awarded to students getting an aggregate of 90% and above in PCM subjects in CBSE or an aggregate of 95% and above in PCM subjects in any state board. For the top 25 admitted students who meet this criterion would be given 100% tuition and hostel fee waiver.

Amaravati is rapidly evolving as an industrial hub. Several industries, R & D organizations are being established in Amaravati. Thus, all the students of SRM University – AP, Amaravati will have ample opportunities as interns in these industries and get industrial exposure. The skills developed and the work exposure will help them get placed in globally known organizations.

The Chennai International Youth Fest 17(CIFY’17) – Biggest Youth Conclave, which is Jointly Organized byYouth Development Consortium and Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of Finance, Government of India, scheduled from 04th to 20th August 2017.The Introductory session and launch was held at The Savera Hotel, Chennai on today 12 July 2017(12/07/2017).

The CIYF 17 is going to be the most exciting Conclave with 200+ Events engaging more than 2 lakh Youngsters across the Nation. The events are going to happen simultaneously in 70+ locations at various venues across Tamil Nadu.

The Chennai International Youth Fest (CIYF) will not only provide an apt platform to the youth to exhibit their talent, but would also generate a spirit of fellowship and awareness amongst them about social and cultural aspects of our country. Therefore, CIYF helps in bringing about positive social changes in the society and further strengthen national integration. Also, the participation of the youth in this event channelizes their energies in right direction. Therefore, CIYF 17 paves the way to empower, enrich and enlighten the mindset of the youth.

Youth Development Consortium (YDC):

Youth represents the most dynamic segment of the population and are the future of the Nation. The global population is expected to increase to 9 billion by 2050, of which, 14% are youth aged between 15 – 24 years. While the world’s youth population will grow significantly, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for youth, especially those living in developing countries’ economically stagnant rural areas – remain limited.

Generally youth is the backbone of a society. Youth’s participation in all aspects of society is very important at any time. There is a great and effective work to be done for upcoming young generation to make them feel empowered and train them for playing an important role in their society.
The youth constitutes the richest wealth of a country. Nearly 50% of the developing world population is youth and children. There are 1.2 billion 15 to 24 year olds in the world out of that one billion live in developing countries. This is often referred to as the ‘youth bulge’, as young people constitute a high and peaking proportion of population. The youth bulge represents both a challenge and an opportunity for development. Its duration is a limited window in which to develop a larger and younger workforce who can drive economic development and play a significant role in the social and political development of our country.
India is one of the youngest nations in the world. About 65% of India’s population is under 35 years of age. Indian youth have never lagged behind when called upon to meet any challenge. What we need, is to identify and channelize the power of youth towards nation building.

Youth Development Consortium (YDC) is taking a positive development approach for working with the next generation of leaders, and developing materials to prepare them for the transition to adulthood, and leadership. YDC strongly believes that when there is a supportive environment – youth are able to find innovative ways to create a future for themselves, and also contribute to the societies and communities in which they live.

Over the past few years, the profile of youth in world has undergone dramatic changes. Roles and responsibilities of youth changed with the passage of time. Instead of being taken care of, they increasingly take care of themselves and others. In today’s world, there are countless opportunities for youth to make a difference, not only in their own lives but also in the lives of others.

In this context, Chennai International Youth Fest (CIYF’ 17) strives to organize and recognize youth groups/organizations by connecting them with Socio – Economic – Environment opportunities available at national or international level, through workshops, seminars, cultural and contests. Our primary goal is to provide youngsters a platform to express their talents across various fields and provide them with necessary resources to nurture it.

CIYF’17 will be going to engage with National and International personalities, Youth Ambassadors, Government Dignitaries, Academic Professionals, Sports Achievers, Artists, Journalist, Youngsters and Students.

Benefits of CIYF’ 17:

Whether you’re already competitive by nature or could use some motivation to challenge yourself, participating in competitions offers an excellent opportunity to engage in teamwork, get a real taste of the business world, and make memorable connections over a shared experience. Very few opportunities in the average student life provide such exposure and realistic outlook towards the competitive nature of real life in such a short span of time as competitions provide.

Certain competitions are quick, often intense experiences in which students often only have a few hours to read and analyze the case, come up with solutions, and present them to a jury. This will help you realize your ability to stress management, self- control, decision making skills, a moral system of belief and creativity and innovation.

Whether it’s starting your own business or studying abroad, CIYF can help you realize your dream, develop technical and conceptual skills, Learn to empower students to take responsibility for their own success. The most important part of CIYF is getting our students away from their comfort zones and to a place where they can wrestle with their sin and immediately apply what they are learning to their lives in a number of ways.

We recognize the importance of placing value on upcoming generations. We place a large emphasis on pouring into students, developing their leadership, talents, and gifts. We believe that by impacting them, we have the ability to impact communities, congregations, people groups and nations not only in the present, but in the future.
