A powerful drama that sketches briefly but in minute detail about the early days of Winston Churchill as he takes over as the Prime Minister! Premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, the film was also screened at the Toronto Film Festival. Since its theatrical release, the film has been termed a classic, garnering positive reviews! It has been acclaimed both critically and commercially! 

Gary Oldman’s won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor besides being nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance for his outstanding performance that is being hailed as his career best! At the 71st British Academy Film Awards, the film received 9 nominations, including Best Film as well as Best British Film, Best Actor for Gary Oldman!

In May 1940 Britain and France are Allies in World War II against Nazi Germany. Before the German invasions of Belgium and Netherlands, the Opposition Labor Party in Parliament demands the resignation of British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain (Ronald Pickup) for being too weak to protect national security. Chamberlain tells Conservative Party advisors that he wants Lord Halifax (Stephen Dillane) as his successor, but Halifax does not yet want to become Prime Minister. Chamberlain must choose the only other man whom other parties will support: Winston Churchill, the First Lord of the Admiralty.

On her first day at work Churchill’s new secretary, Elizabeth Layton (Lily Thomas) quickly upsets him by failing to follow his instructions. After Churchill causes Layton to cry and almost quit, his wife Clementine Churchill (Kristin Scott) rebukes him, reminding him that as Prime Minister he will have to be nicer to others.-One of the best scenes in the film, this is!

  In May 1945 the Allies achieve victory over Germany, but Winston Churchill loses the General Election in July!
