The meeting will be held at the Sri VDSwami Auditorium, SN main campus on the 27th and 28th and at the Taj Coromandel on the 29th of July.
The term ocular surface broadly refers to the regions in the eye termed as conjunctiva, eyelids and cornea, any compromise of this region either due to external reasons like injuries, entry of chemicals, direct ailments or ailments transmitted due to infections from diseases affecting other parts of the body leads to partial or total vision impairment. A perfect ocular surface is indispensable to good ophthalmic health and vision and any infection/injury to the same reflects in a host of eye ailments like Dry eye syndrome, Stevens syndrome, and chemical injuries to name a few.
As a pioneering ophthalmic institution Sankara Nethralaya has conducted the 1st and 2nd OSKON to discuss the challenges facing this region in years 2012 and 2015 which helped in gaining valuable insights into the various ailments affecting this region and new approaches towards tackling the same. The 3rd OSKON will witness experts from the field from all over the world exchanging their knowledge, real time experiences, latest treat ment modalities, technology in the field, presentation of white papers, debates etc. This year’s event assumes great significance as it is being held in memory of Professor Giancarlo Falcinelli the legendary Italian Ophth almologist and researcher and father of ‘Modified Osteo-OdontoKeratoprosthesis’ (MOOKP) the revolutionary process through which the tissues needed for treatment of the patient’s eye are extracted from the tooth of the patient.
It is noteworthy to mention that Dr Geetha Iyer and Dr Bhaskar Srinivasan serving as senior consultants at Sankara Nethralaya were trained in this revolutionary treatment process directly by the grandmaster and today the institution is a leader in the same, being the only centre in the world to be performing all the different types of keratoprostheses This year’s conference also marks the launch of a nationwide awareness campaign against the availability of ‘chuna in plastic sachets’ used in betel chewing and acids used as cleaning agents in homes, which cause irreparable damage to the cornea, leading to irreversible blindness. Vitriolage is a major cause for concern, especially with attacks on young women.
These incidents primarily affect children and young adults and leads to significant psycho social economic damages. The valedictory function of OSKON-2018 is being held at 11:00am on Sunday July 29th, 2018 at the Ball Room, Taj Coromandel, Chennai.
