 Peripheral Nerves

Nerves are important structures that arise from brain and spinal cord and are responsible for sensations like to uch, pain and special sensations like taste, vision, hearing and smell. Similarly these nerves are responsible for the muscles to contract and move our hands, feet and even face. Without nerves we can’t walk, move our hands and work or even smile.

History of nerve surgery in India

In ancient India, Sushruta’s description of the nerves demonstrated how he meticulously studied the neuro-an atomy of both his patients and his educational cadavers. “Two nerves lower down at the back of ear (vidhura) which if cut, produce deafness; a pair of nerves inside the two nostrils which if cut, cause loss of smell; a pair of nerves below the end of the eyebrow which if cut, causes blindness” said Sushruta in his Sushruta Samhita.

 Challenges of Peripheral Nerve Surgery

Nerve lesions may take years for complete recovery. The treatment also requires highly specialised skills.Repair of injured nerve involve surgery using magnification and microscope for connecting fine nerves with each othe r.Reconstructive Plastic surgeons, hand surgeons skilled in fine surgical reconstruction and neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeons interested in fine microneural surgery perform nerve repair. It involves prolonged Phys iotherapy, occupational therapy and rehabilitation to make the patient go back to their normal life.

Need for public awareness in nerve surgery

The results after nerve surgery depend on the timing of surgery. Early and timely surgery can restore complete function. If the nerve surgery is delayed beyond a certain time, the muscles undergo irreparable damage and the e patients are doomed to live their entire life with disability. It is the responsibility of the medical fraternity to spread this message among the general public. World class centres treating these complex problems are avai lable in our country and the services of these centres should be widely publicised, so that even a common man should be aware of their availability.

Support for victims

These patients often are unable to support themselves or their families. They are transformed from being bread-winners and productive members of the community to being dependents on their family. Only with the support of the society they can get back to being productive members of the society.
