MSSRF30 inaugural function presided by CM and Deputy CM

The M S Swaminathan Research Foundation celebrated its 30th anniversary today at MSSRF premises in Chenn ai. The Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru Edappadi K Palanisami and the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru O Panneerselvam presided and inaugurated the International Conference on Achieving Susta inable Development Goals and Strengthening Science for Climate Resilience.

The Chairperson of MSSRF Dr Madhura Swaminathan delivered the welcome address and in her speech she poi nted out that MSSRF is focusing on researches pertaining to adaptation to climate change as it’s a global issue. Dr N Anil Kumar, the Executive Director of MSSRF while presenting the annual report marked on Prof Swamina than’s emphasis on sustainable development from the early years, beginning from the Varanasi Science Congre ss in 1968, whereas, only now the importance of sustainable development is focused widely through the UN’s Su stainable Development Goals.

Mr N Ram, the Chairperson of Kasturi and Sons delivered the felicitation address, recalled and thanked the Ta mil Nadu Governement and the former Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu Dr M Karunanidhi and Dr J Jayalalitha for leasing out the land for the Foundation before 30 years. He then requested the current Chief Minister of Tamil N adu Thiru Edappadi K Palanisami to extend the lease period. Mr N Ram also spoke about achieving sustainable development goals through modern science.

Prof M S Swaminathan during his presidential speech said that we need to focus on nutrition sustainability as we focus on food sustainability.

The Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu gave the special address and released 30-Years’ MSSRF Innovation and Impact Report. During his speech he congratulated Prof MS Swaminathan and MSSRF for the agricultural resear ch work that it is doing and said that a state’s development relies on agriculture. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nad u listed the achievements of Prof M S Swaminathan and said that Tamil Nadu continues to be one of the largest p roducers of food crops by following various innovative and productive agricultural methods.

The technical sessions of the conference was later inaugurated by internationally eminent scientists and per son alities namely Ms. Kundhavi Kadiresan, Assistant Director-General and UN FAO’s Regional Representative for A sia and the Pacific, Mr. Eric Kenefick, Country Director, UN World Food Programme, Dr. Siebe Schuur, Agricultur al Counsellor accredited in India and Sri Lanka, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Ambassador Ken neth M Quinn, President, World Food Prize Foundation, USA.
