Prashanth Hospitals ‘First in India’ to Introduce a Breakthrough Technology for Super Microsurgery

Pioneering Technology available for Various Life-saving Surgeries

Chennai, September 6th, 2017: Prashanth Hospitals, one of Chennai’s leading and state-of-the-art Super specialty hospital brings a cutting edge technology for the first time in India by introducing the ‘40x Microscope’, a break-through solution for surgeries which require high precision. This was announced by Dr. C. Geetha Haripriya, Chairperson, Prashanth Hospitals at a press conference today.

The ‘40x Microscope’ with magnification capability of 40 times the normal naked eye vision is used for connecting blood vessels and repairing nerves in the field of Microsurgery, which is in vogue today. This new high-tech microscope also enables surgeons in viewing the lymphatic vessels underneath the skin and sub-millimeter blood vessels which can be repaired under 40 x magnifications, thus resulting in rightly naming the procedure as ‘Super Microsurgery’.

Commenting on this pioneering technology, Dr. C. Geetha Haripriya, Chairperson, Prashanth Hospitals said, “We have always believed in providing the best and the most advanced treatment to all our patients. The 40x microscope is revolutionary and will immensely boost the clinical and surgical treatments provided at our hospital, further proving beneficial for doctors and also bolstering the use of innovative and cost effective techniques to treat our patients.”

The 40x microscope which has a ICG Dye based Near Infrared (NIR) Camera will assist surgeons while performing complicated surgeries like Plastic surgery, Breast surgery, Diabetic foot surgery and Neurosurgery and also on those with Brain Aneurysm, proving to be a lifeline for patients with complicated health conditions.

Babies with finger tip amputations will enormously benefit from this new technological advancement as it involves high precision and expertise.

There are instances, when doctors have to perform surgery on very thin flimsy sub-millimeter ‘Lymphatic Vessels’ as in the case of persistent Lymphedema following surgery on breast cancer patients. These patients will benefit from a feature of the new operating microscope, made specifically keeping Lymphedema Surgery in mind that increases the magnification to 40 times than normal.

With this new operating microscope, doctors will be able to perform the below mentioned medical procedures which were near impossible earlier:

Plastic Surgery:

– Lympho-venous bypass for upper limb edema in Breast Cancer survivors.

– Super thin micro vascular free flaps for skin defects of hand and face.

– Distal most fingertip injuries.

Breast Surgery:

– ‘Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy’ in Breast Conservation Therapy for Breast Cancer patients. The same technique can also be used for Pelvic Tumors.

Neurosurgery:

Aneurysms in Brain
The new ICG Dye based NIR Camera helps in assessing the effectiveness of surgery while placing small metallic clips along the neck of the Aneurysm (Abnormally Dilated Blood Vessel) that prevents blood from entering into the aneurysm sac so that it can no longer pose a risk for bleeding.
Also, patients with the rare Moyamoya Disease will benefit from this 40x magnification feature, where bypass surgery can be done to increase blood supply beyond the constricted blood vessels.

Diabetic Foot surgery:

Dr. G. B. Rajan, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Prashanth hospital’s Lymphedema Clinic said that the new ICG Dye NIR Camera technology can also be of help to common Diabetic Foot patients to assess Tissue Perfusion, especially the forefoot and toes.

Dr. P. Ravishankar, Onco Surgeon said “ICG Dye and NIR Camera combination is a boon for sentinel node (the first few lymph nodes into which the lymphatic’s drain) biopsy which is a surgical procedure used to determine if cancer has spread beyond a primary tumor into the lymphatic system, most commonly in Breast cancer and Pelvic tumours

Urology:

Micro TESE
By using the 40x microscope, doctors also have a much higher chance of identifying tube containing sperms using Micro TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction), thereby increasing the chance of a man having his own offspring rather than relying on donors.

Speaking about the first successful super microsurgery aided by the 40x microscope conducted at Prashanth Hospitals, Dr. Guru Balaji said, “It was a Micro TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction) that was done on a 38 year old male whose earlier testicular biopsy proved negative sperms. However, under this 40x magnification, full and less translucent seminiferous tubules were identified with ease and the extracted sperms were then frozen for intracytoplasmic sperm injection technique (ICSI).”
