Proactive measures of Indian Coast Guard in Liaison with Stakeholders Ensures Nil Loss of Life in times of Cyclone ‘Burevi’

Indian Coast Guard’s proactive liaison with all stakeholders along with various measures, all Indian Fishermen Boats had returned safely to harbour, prior to Cyclone ‘Burevi’ making landfall and more importantly nil loss of life and property at sea was ensured.
A low pressure area developed near to A&N island on 26/27 Nov 2020, which further intensified and Tropi cal Cyclone ‘Burevi’ finally formed on December 1, 2020, in the Bay of Bengal. In wake of the weather warning the Indian Coast Guard initiated a series of pre-emptive and proactive measures to prevent loss of fishermen lives at sea. Ships and aircraft were pressed into action since 27 Nov 2020 for issuance of advisories and warn ings in vernacular language to fishermen at sea for their safe return to ports. The ICG Remote Operating Stat ions through VHF requested fishing boats to return Harbour. All stakeholders were also advised for initiating preventive measures. From 28 Nov to 04 Dec, during the period total of 15 ships were deployed and 12 air sorties were launched in the coast of Tamil Nadu. During the Cyclone ‘Burevi’, a distress call was also received re garding three personnel stranded in Manali Tivu Island, near Rameshwaram since three days. A hovercraft was immediately pressed into action despite challenging weather conditions and all three personnel were rescued.
