The Advanced Endoscopic Spine Centre will cater to problems in the lower back, facet joint pain, back pain radiating to the legs (sciatic pain) and neck pain radiating to the hands. The centre is equipped with high-end technology, radiofrequency equipment and HD cameras that provides excellent magnification and clear visualisation, for pre cise high-speed burrs to ensure an extremely safe procedure for the patient.

With growing incidences of spine ailments, the centre aims to facilitate seamless treatment options that would aid in faster recovery. Spine surgeons at GGHC have performed over 300 successful endoscopic spine surgeries over the past five years, with over 70 of them performed in the last one year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Alok Khullar, CEO, Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai said, “At GGHC, patient-centricity comes first. The launch of an exclusive quaternary centre for advanced endoscopic spine procedures with the latest technology, expert doctors and highly training technicians, paves way for best-in-class treatment for any spine-related issues. A minimally invasive surgery that provides immediate pain relief and very less post-surgical care comes as a boon to patients who are suffering from spine ailments. During the pandemic, we were able to successfully treat and discharge patients within 36 hours, to avoid infection risk of Covid-19.”

Elaborating about the centre, Dr. Karunakaran, Director, Institute of Advanced Spine Sciences, Gleneagles Global Health City, Che nnai said, “The centre aims to provide immediate pain relief to the patients with utmost safety. Some of the procedures that we handle endoscopically at the centre are Lumbar spine – lower back, lumbar disc prola pse, canal stenosis, lumbar facet arthritis and cervical disc prolapse. The endoscopic spine procedure is a suture-less day care procedure that ensures safety, preserves anatomy and removes the pathology, where the patient recovers faster and resumes normalcy within 3 days as there is minimal blood loss, minimal usage of medication and very less pain during the procedure. The procedure is highly beneficial for high-risk patients and those suffering from co-morbidities.”

Recently, a 40-year-old plumber was treated at the Advanced Endoscopic Spine Centre as he had an acute epis ode of pain in his lower back and legs, along with numbness from the anal region to both legs. The patient was clinically diagnosed to have Cauda Equina Syndrome and was advised to have immediate surgery. The patient had a massive disc prolapse at L4 and L5 and was tested positive for Covid-19. His only option for treatment was through an endoscopic procedure wherein he would be

administered with local anaesthesia. The procedure was completed within a few hours of admission and the patient was relieved of his symptoms immediately. He was discharged and was advised to be in isolation to avoid the spread of Covid-19 to others. The patient has now recovered well and he has been asked to perform a set of exercises to improve his muscle function and bowel bladder function.

Commenting further, Dr. Phani Kiran, Senior Consultant Institute of Advanced Spine Sciences, Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai said, Most of the spinal problems do not need surgery but the patients with severe sym ptoms, not responding to others measures need surgical treatment. There is an undue fear in the minds of most people when faced with the prospect of spine surgery. Advanced technology, minimally invasive techniques, specialized surgical training and years of experience have made spine surgeries very safe today. Hence, there is no need to worry. Endoscopic spine surgery is rapidly becoming the gold standard for the treatment of lumbar disc problems.”

With new developments in technology, spine surgeries have witnessed various technological advancements that provides ease in treatment. Through timely endoscopic intervention, patients can now get back on their feet wit hin a couple of hours post-surgery with immediate relief from pain. The patients undergoing this procedure are discharged on the same day post-surgery with help of physiotherapy and exercises.
