Chennai based stand-up comic Abishek Kumar decodes ‘Gender Roles & Masculinity’ in a hilarious UnGap chat show with his father M. V. Baalaji 

There has always been a rising debate on a man’s responsibilities in our society. Every generation has their own thoughts. So, as a part of #Ungap chat series on Instagram, Chennai’s sensational stand-up comic Abishek Kumar has a candid conversation with his father, M.V. Baalaji about gender roles and masculinity among various other vulnerable conversations from their personal experiences.

During the chat the absolutely fun spirited father-son duo share some candid moments from their personal lives and also gamify the definitions of gender roles and how it is different for both of them.

“A man has to be free, he cannot take care of kids at home, and do all sorts of (chores, like) changing the diapers, napkins etc’ said Mr Baalaji, on the concept of ‘Stay at home Dad” on which a hysteric Abhishek attempts to give his counter perspective, breaking it down like a true comic. 

When asked about defining ‘Who is a Man?’’, The duo shared their own de finitions where Abishek mentioned, ‘A man is someone who comes with a lot of privilege and who often tends to overplay it’, while his father felt ot her wise, and added, ‘What you said is about privilege, I call it respons bil ity. (as) ‘whenever something happens in a family, the man is blamed first’’.

The duo further dives into some interesting observations, breaking down gender stereotypes such as how a man should never cry or if a mustache plays an important role in a Man’s life.

Covering various personal experiences from their lives, the conversation further delves into Mr. Baalaji’s  emoti onal experience, where one of Ab ishek’s reels were trolled and misinterpreted by the audience, leading to instan ces when sharing his emotions, even with close friends and family became difficult for him. “Keep it to yourself, e njoy it! At the low point let the time pass”, he added.
