Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Under the Scheme (CMCHIS) Free Treatment for Diabetic Retinopathy

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY DISEASE:

Diabetic Retinopathy is an eye disease caused by diabetes. In diabetic patients, excess sugar in the blood gradually weakens the blood vessels in the eye, damaging the retina. In the early stages, this condition may not show any symptoms. However, if left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss.

This condition takes years to develop into a vision-threatening stage. If identified early and treated appropriately, vision loss can be prevented. Hence, it is recommended that people with diabetes undergo an annual retina screening with an eye specialist to prevent vision complications.

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY & VISION LOSS:

There are two main reasons why diabetic retinopathy leads to vision loss.-:

1. Retinal swelling (Macular Edema)

2. Retinal bleeding (Hemorrhage)

Both these complications can lead to a gradual or sudden loss of vision.

TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR DIABETIC RETINOPATHY:

1.LASER TREATMENT:

To stop or reduce the leakage of blood vessels in the retina using a laser.

2. EYE INJECTIONS (INTRAVITREAL INJECTIONS):

To control swelling in the retina by injecting medicine directly into the eye.

SYMPTOMS OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY:

• Sudden or blurred vision

• Leaking of blood vessels in the retina.

APPEARANCE OF DARK SPOTS (FLOATERS) IN THE VISION

Dark spots appear in the eye when blood leaks into the eye and blocks light from reaching the retina.

• Difficulty in seeing clearly

• Distorted or faded colors

Regular consultation with a retina specialist can prevent the progression of the disease and preserve vision.

We kindly encourage everyone to take advantage of this awareness and service.

PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM DIABETES:

• 1 in 10 diabetic individuals is affected by diabetic retinopathy.

• Its prevalence is higher in South Tamil Nadu.

In India, the number of diabetic patients is steadily increasing.

In 2019, 77 million people were diagnosed with diabetes.By 2045, it is estimated to increase to 134 million.

Out of all diabetic patients:

• 20% are affected by diabetic retinopathy.

• 10% of them develop severe vision loss.
