Story -:

Yogi Babu serves as the priest in a village so parched—utterly devoid of water—that its residents resort to singing mournful laments in desperate prayer for rain.
Although he has reached a marriageable age, Yogi Babu remains unmarried. He is in love with Lovelin; however, Lovelin’s father adamantly insists that he will give his daughter’s hand in marriage only to a man from a village where water is readily available. Consequently, Yogi Babu’s marriage prospects remain stalled.

Later, when a water diviner is brought in to survey the village for groundwater sources, he declares that water can be found specifically beneath Yogi Babu’s property.
Driven by the dual desire to secure his own marriage and provide water for his village, Yogi Babu grants permission to dig a well on his land. Yet, before water could be struck, something entirely unexpected emerges from the excavation instead; the remainder of the story unfolds to reveal what transpired thereafter.

Movie Review -:

Yogi Babu stars as the film’s protagonist; true to form, he brings the house down with his signature brand of sarcasm, wit, and counter-dialogues, while also scoring big in the emotional scenes. Lovelin, playing the female lead, leaves a lasting impression as a spirited, rebellious young woman who rides a bullet motorcycle and stands her ground—even arguing with her father—to secure his consent for her marriage to Yogi Babu, boldly asserting, “If I’m going to get married, it will be to Yogi Babu.

You educated me; shouldn’t you trust *me* enough to let me choose, rather than trusting *him*?” The film’s greatest strength lies in its authenticity and rootedness; the filmmakers have vividly brought a village to life right before our eyes. From the ever-wandering grandfather and the “martyr” grandfather to the village headman and his entourage, the various characters don’t merely act—they *live* their roles. In particular, the scene in the first half where the entire village sets out to observe the water flow is guaranteed to leave you in stitches—you’ll be laughing until your stomach hurts!

Through the medium of comedy, director Suresh Sangaiah delivers a hard-hitting message: while the government fights to preserve a multi-million-year-old fossil in the name of archaeological research, has it given any thought to the plight of the people who are currently struggling for even a single drop of water? However, since the entire film unfolds within a comedic framework, it remains unclear why the scene in the second half—where the villagers get beaten up by the police—was also portrayed as a comedy. This raises the question: how, then, are they supposed to effectively convey the characters’ pain and suffering to the audience?

Technically, the cinematography is excellent, and Nivas K. Prasanna’s background score is superb. The contributions of every actor in the film, along with the technical crew’s work, are commendable. The only minor drawback is that the film felt a bit rushed towards the end. All in all, *Kenathai Kaanom* is definitely a film that everyone should watch.
