Movie Review -:
Directed by director Mohan G, the movie ‘Draupadi 2’ is set in the 14th century as a film that deals with the historical events in South India from a political and social angle.

The film opens with some Hindus in South India realizing that their ancestral lands are now under the control of the Wakf Board and that they have no right to them. Around the same time, two young women living abroad are sent by their father to a village in hopes of restoring an ancient temple. While traveling with their guide, a young man named Richard Rishi, one of the women becomes possessed by the spirit of the kings of old. Then, the heroic story of Veera Simma Kadava Raya who saved the land and people from Sultanate rule is told.

The film revolves around the Hoysala commander Veera Simma Kadava Raya (Richard Rishi) fighting against the Islamic Sultanate regime to save his king (Natti). The Sultans in Delhi and the Tamkhanis of the Tughlaq dynasty in Madurai are depicted as carrying out a brutal policy of subjugating and proselytizing Hindus.

The film eloquently records that the valor and sacrifice of Tamils played an important role in the reasons why Islamic rule was not fully established in South India.
Some scenes of the film are also controversial. A scene where a woman sexually assaulted by a Muslim king commits suicide and a Hindu king accepts it as a “sacrifice”, and the death of a queen who postpones child birth for astrological predictions as a “sacrifice” are set to show the period’s mindset about the status of women. Similarly, the verses of the Muslim king Tamkhani who says that women are not to be ruled but to be ruled, reveal the cruel attitude of that regime.

Director Mohan G has boldly scripted many hidden incidents in history. His thinking is evident throughout the film as the lively screenplay, straightforward dialogues and scenes that openly present the political point of view. However, some storylines like the ancestral land issue shown at the beginning of the film are left unresolved.
Technically, the film has received a lot of attention. Battle scenes, palace settings, period environment created with the help of hand-picked VFX and AI experts look very natural and grand. The cinematography, background music and art direction are located in a way that drags us into the historical period.

Trying to position itself as a historical film, ‘Draupadi 2’ is a radical attempt to bring the hidden sides of history to the screen with political courage. The acting, concept and technology come together to perfectly convey director Mohan Ji’s vision. Although it is a film with direct political themes, ‘Draupadi 2’ stands out as a historical epic that reminds us of the valor and sacrifice of Tamils.
