A masterpiece from the House of Unite d Amateur Artistes, Lights On had the a udience in a thrall at Rasika Ranjani Sab ha Hall. Staged in 1998 ,the play had
been the darling of the masses not just in India but across the US, Canada, Aust ralia and the pwhole of Europe.
If a drama buff had been floored by the impact of UAA flagship play Rahasiyam Parama Rahasiyam, Lights On will make you stand up and give a fitting thundero us cheers at the end of it ..
Known for his intelligence in the way he executes his character, Mahendran has revelled in the important aspects of dramatization and direction to go with the orchestrated writing of the dependable Venkat to the inspired story of the late Gollapudi Maruti Rao.
In a simple storyline the momentum picks up from the word go. A bunch of dramatists meet after a length of time for the rehearsal of a new play.
The mood is sombre as their heroine Lalitha has died under mysterious circumstances. The police rule it as a suicide but the writer of the play has strong reasons to suspect it as a murder and the involvement of the artistes.
The writer is keen to unravel the mystery as he and Lalitha were hooked to each other .Enough fodder for Mahendran, as producer Panjumon, second heroine Kavitha, Hero Mudikondon, Director Karmegam and the fringe artistes to go out of their comfort zones to prove their innocence.
A crime thriller laced with comedy lines which are timely and packed with intelligence is lapped up by an audience, having tasted the essence and clarity dis hed out by UAA for over seven decades.
When the master crafter Mahendran is at the act, he ensures that his co-artiste s rally around him for the perfect final denouement.
Even the ones who had been a fan of master crime novelist James Hadley Chase could not have bargained for the final suspense-drenched climax.
The technical team including lighting and sound effects will leave you wondering at the marvel and the efforts behind the act.
After all in a team game, it is not fair to pick an individual. But then no mistaking that there can be only one Gary Sobers, one Sivaji Ganesan and one TMS. One can justifiably add Mahendran to that list. Much ahead of its time, Lights On is bang on target.
Straight from the heart of the motley bunch, having a ball and an extended one at that Not at the audience expense with a welcome all tag. Not for nothing it is said that some of the best things in life are free.
