Story -:

*Neelira* is an emotional war drama released in 1988, set against the backdrop of the Eelam War and told through the memories of a child. Rather than peddling hatred or violence, the film serves to convey the profound impact of war. Set in 1988—a time when the Eelam War in Sri Lanka was at its peak—the movie offers a deep exploration of what war looks like through the eyes of a child and how it affects the lives of ordinary people.

Documentary filmmaker Somitharan has captured the brutality of war and the ensuing losses through poignant scenes, without resorting to gratuitous violence. Naveen Chandra, Roopa Kodivayur, and Sananth deliver highly realistic performances. As the narrative unfolds from a child’s perspective, the young boy’s performance stands out as particularly exceptional.

The background score (by K) and cinematography (by Selvarathnam Pratheepan) vividly recreate the wartime atmosphere, bringing it to life right before the viewer’s eyes.it isnot a propaganda piece, but rather a film that speaks to genuine human emotions.

Neelira* is a significant and deeply moving work—a must-watch film that portrays the pain of war with profound humanity. It is a movie that everyone wishing to understand the context of the Eelam conflict should see.

Movie Review -:

‘Neelira,’ hailed as one of the finest films of the year, has garnered a four-star rating. Although set against the backdrop of the 1988 Sri Lankan civil war, the film deeply explores how true love can serve as a catalyst for peace between two diametrically opposed factions. Debutant director Somitharan is highly commended for crafting a screenplay—spanning 92 minutes—that is both gripping and impeccably executed.

The film poignantly captures the suffering of the people, the persistent threat of war, ideological rifts, and the stark reality that there is no permanent end to conflict.
The performances of the cast stand out as a major highlight. Naveen delivers a commanding performance in the role of the Captain. Sananth captivated audiences, particularly with his final dialogue. Roopa Koduvayur shines in a pivotal scene, proving that her talent warrants further exploration; she had previously delivered a stellar performance in the film ‘Yamakathaki’ as well.

The film offers the current generation a clear understanding of how the war initially erupted during that era. The depiction of a traditional Sri Lankan Tamil wedding ceremony on screen also provided a fresh and unique cinematic experience.

Overall, ‘Neelira’ has garnered immense critical acclaim. The manner in which the director vividly portrays—with crystal clarity—the genesis of the war in Sri Lanka in 1988 is truly astounding. This film is, without a doubt, a masterpiece; it deserves a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
