Movie Review -:
Director Rathna Kumar conveys—with both poetic flair and sophistication—the notion that, despite years of intense and passionate romance, the ultimate culmination of a romantic journey is often nothing more than a few fleeting moments of physical intimacy. He posits that while a woman may be metaphorically described as the moon, a flower, or a star, she remains, ultimately, just a woman; similarly, though a man may be likened to a lion or a bull, he remains, at the core, just a man. The manner in which he articulates that the love shared between these two individuals is not greater than the realities of everyday life—and that there are far greater things to achieve beyond the realm of romance—along with the way he has crafted the accompanying scenes, is bound to elicit applause not only from lovers but also from those who are not currently in a relationship.
Vithu, who delivered a menacing performance as a villain in the film *Retro*, captivates audiences in this movie as both the protagonist and a romantic lead. His portrayal—emphasizing that love is his sole identity, and depicting his earnest efforts to etch himself into his girlfriend’s memory—is certain to capture the attention of young women. With his simple, “boy-next-door” charm, Vithu leaves a distinct mark on the film through his restrained and realistic acting; he authentically conveys both the tender emotions of love and the emotional anguish caused by separation from his partner. His performance instills confidence that he will undoubtedly emerge as an indispensable leading man in Kollywood.
Although the heroine, Preethi Asrani—hailing from another state—bears a distinct non-local look, she transcends this visual distinction through the sheer power of her acting, firmly establishing herself in the minds of the audience as the character “Viji.” Whether expressing her love by playfully slapping her boyfriend on the cheek, or portraying the anxious state of mind as she bids farewell to her partner leaving town, she utilizes her exceptional acting skills to elegantly convey the profound depth of her love to the viewers.
Avinash, who plays the protagonist’s friend, does more than just lament over romantic failures; he also periodically breaks the tension during intense situations, successfully eliciting laughter from the audience. Master Mahendran, appearing in a special cameo; Adhira Pandilakshmi, playing the protagonist’s mother; and Sindhu Shyam, playing the heroine’s mother—all prove to be apt choices for their respective roles, moving the narrative forward effectively and adding significant strength to the screenplay.
Mathesh Manickam’s cinematography not only evokes nostalgic memories of forgotten beach romances and bus-ride romances but also allows the audience to truly appreciate the paths the lovers traverse and the various locations they visit.
Set to the music of Sean Roldan, the songs effortlessly convey both the celebratory joy and the poignant pain of love to the minds of the viewers. Although the pacing is deliberate, the background score unfolds with deep emotion, ensuring that every scene remains thoroughly engaging.
While the plot essentially revolves solely around the romance and the journey of the lovers, Editor R.S. Satish Kumar has done a commendable job of compiling the scenes; he ensures the narrative moves forward without any lag and effectively transmits the romantic sentiments embedded in the screenplay and visuals directly to the audience.
Director Rathna Kumar—who has already proven his mettle in portraying the romances of ordinary people not merely with realism, but also with sweetness and strength—goes a step further this time. He beautifully and profoundly conveys the message that, alongside the celebration of love, there exists a life that extends far beyond it.
It is a well-known fact that there is an intimate connection between love and the beach; however, Director Rathna Kumar adds a new layer of glory to the concept of “beach romance” by revealing a hidden gem of a spot within that very beach—a location where the protagonist chooses to make his heartfelt declaration of love.
Although he firmly posits the notion that even the most intense, soul-melting romances ultimately culminate in physical desire, Director Rathna Kumar conveys this idea with great sophistication through his visual storytelling. Furthermore, he garners applause for his sharp and honest dialogue, which offers insightful observations on the nature of love, gender dynamics, and the realities of everyday life.
All in all, the film *29* is a celebration that will resonate not only with those currently in love but also with those who may have forgotten how to love.
