Story -:
Swarna, who entered into a love marriage, visits her in-laws’ home for the first time. While she initially struggles to gain the family’s affection and acceptance, she gradually begins to win a place in everyone’s hearts.
However, shadows from the past suddenly intrude upon her peaceful life. It is revealed that the woman living as Swarna is actually Jhansi, and that her past holds many hidden mysteries. A man named Karuna emerges from that past, attempting to turn her life upside down. The film’s central theme revolves around her struggle to protect her family and confront her past.

Movie Review-:
The answer to this question is certainly “Yes.” Samantha carries the story from start to finish. She delivers an excellent performance across two dimensions: as a family woman and as a courageous woman facing danger.
Her dedication is particularly evident in the action sequences of the second half. Even after a long hiatus, her star appeal on screen remains undiminished.
Although Diganth, playing the husband, delivers a natural performance, his character lacks significant weight in the story. Gulshan Devaiah makes a strong initial impression as the villain, but his impact diminishes later because the screenplay fails to provide the necessary depth to his character.
Santhosh Narayanan’s background score breathes life into many scenes; the music elevates the emotional tone, especially during high-tension moments. The cinematography and production design are well-suited to the story.
However, the film’s biggest weakness lies in its screenplay. Despite a promising premise, the attempt to narrate it in a gripping manner falters slightly. Many scenes are predictable, which reduces the element of surprise.
The attempt to present a female-centric action story with commercial appeal is commendable. Certain family scenes and Samantha’s natural acting keep the film engaging. References to older films and moments of humor also entertain the audience.
The film could have reached greater heights with deeper emotions and stronger conflicts in the screenplay. In particular, the face-off between the villain and the heroine could have been written more powerfully. The excessive length of some scenes also hampers the film’s pacing.
‘Engal Thangam’ is a novel attempt that tries to blend family sentiments with female-centric action. However, it does not fully succeed due to a weak screenplay. Nevertheless, the film is a one-time watch, thanks to Samantha’s performance and her fan base. Samantha shines like gold, carrying the entire film; however, the screenplay—which should have polished that gold—falls a bit short.
