Movie Review -:

Dhanush has truly lived the role of ‘Karna’—running away from home at a young age, failing to find success in life, making a living through illicit means, returning to his father in a state of distress, and finally stepping up to take charge after his father’s passing. As usual, he has delivered a stellar performance, excelling in both the emotional and action sequences.

K.S. Ravikumar delivers such a realistic portrayal of Dhanush’s father that one might find themselves wondering, “Is that really him?” Karunas, Prithviraj, and the entire supporting cast have also delivered excellent performances. The sequence where Suraj—having waited for years for the moment he could finally corner Dhanush—steps into the fray himself, is a brilliant piece of storytelling.

The first half of the film, right up until the bank heist begins, unfolds primarily as an emotional drama. It is difficult to predict to what extent this will appeal to a commercial audience, as the pacing is quite slow; furthermore, given that Dhanush’s character is a thief, it remains to be seen whether the director’s efforts during the first hour—aimed at establishing the moral justification for his actions—will resonate with every viewer.

While the first half proceeds at a measured pace, the subsequent sequences—including the heist plan devised by Dhanush, Prithviraj, and Karunas, their infiltration of the bank, and the arrival of ‘Aadukalam’ Naren—are all high-octane moments that are sure to elicit whistles and cheers from the audience.

While the first half unfolds at a rather leisurely pace, the sequence involving the heist plan hatched by Dhanush, Prithviraj, and Karunas to rob the bank—followed by their infiltration of the premises and the subsequent arrival of *Aadukalam* Naren—features moments that are truly worthy of a “star whistle” reception.

The second half maintains a brisk tempo, racing through the successive bank robbery sequences, Jayaram’s strategic maneuvers, Suraj’s investigation, and the suspenseful question of how Dhanush manages to evade capture and fulfill his mission. However, one cannot help but notice a lack of logical consistency; the grounded realism that characterized *Por Thozhil*—the director’s previous film—is conspicuously absent from the action sequences in *Kaara*.

The film positions the protagonist as a “People’s Hero”—a superhero-like figure fighting on behalf of the masses. While the way the climax unfolds aligns well with this cinematic archetype, it feels somewhat disappointing coming from the director of *Por Thozhil*. The film effectively highlights how the common people of the 1990s were already grappling with the consequences of the economic struggles we face today, and it draws attention to how unscrupulous lenders exploit and deceive the uneducated populace. Furthermore, the manner in which the filming of the movie *Thevar Magan* is depicted within the narrative is particularly engaging.

On the technical front, given that the story is set in the 1990s, the cinematography—despite many scenes being shot on constructed sets—succeeds in capturing and presenting the visuals with a striking sense of realism. G. V. Prakash’s musical contribution—encompassing both the songs and the background score—feels somewhat derivative, echoing themes and styles heard in many of his previous films. Strengths: The performances delivered by Dhanush and the supporting the second half of the film, particularly the sequences involving the bank robbery.

Weaknesses: The first 45 minutes of the film—while arguably necessary for establishing the plot—unfold at an extremely sluggish pace; the screenplay, lacking any major plot twists, follows a conventional trajectory typical of commercial “hero-centric” cinema. Overall: Although *Kaara* suffers from occasional flaws scattered throughout, it ultimately manages to achieve success in its portrayal of this struggle undertaken on behalf of the common people.
