Story-:

The story of *Baththa* is set in 1986. A young boy named Sabari insists on buying a favorite toy and becomes inseparable from it, playing with it constantly—even on his way to school. One day, while heading to school, he witnesses a brutal scene: a gangster named Patha (Vijay Sethupathi) mercilessly beats another gangster named Jothi, leaving blood splattered everywhere. Sabari is terrified by this sight.

Later, Sabari develops an intense fear of Patha after hearing friends claim that the gangster can easily smash down doors and even keeps a pet lion at home. Meanwhile, during his annual exams, Sabari gets caught by a teacher with the toy; it is subsequently confiscated and kept in the staff room. With the exams concluding that day, he realizes that if he doesn’t retrieve the toy immediately, he won’t be able to get it back until the holidays are over.

The very next morning after school closes for the holidays, he sneaks into the school unnoticed to retrieve the toy. Before leaving, he visits the restroom. Upon stepping out, he realizes he had left the doors open; he then locks both the room where the toy was kept and the restroom door. Suddenly, someone starts knocking on the restroom door from the inside. A voice shouts, “Hey, it’s Patha! Who locked me in here? If I get out, you’re dead!” Terrified, Sabari flees without opening the door.

Vijay Sethupathi is left stranded, unable to open the door. Despite trying various methods, he fails to unlock it. Did Vijay Sethupathi, who was trapped inside, manage to get out? What happened to him? What the young boy did next forms the rest of the story.

Movie Review-:

Director Balaji Tharaneetharan has crafted this film with a unique premise and a screenplay that deeply moves the audience. From the opening scene to the very end, the film keeps us constantly wondering what will happen next—a factor that stands as its greatest strength.

Through Vijay Sethupathi’s character, ‘Patha’, the film beautifully conveys the sentiment that we often fail to appreciate the value of something while it is with us, realizing its worth only after it is gone. Furthermore, the director effectively illustrates—through various scenes—the foolishness and cruelty of physically assaulting someone without considering that they, have a family waiting for them.

Vijay Sethupathi delivers a stunning performance: initially threatening others while trapped in the restroom, then—as the situation shifts—pleading for help without even knowing who has locked him in, and finally weeping as he thinks of his wife and daughter, believing he will never see them again.

Matching him every step of the way, child actor Sai commands attention with his own impressive performance. Playing the character ‘Sabari’, Sai excels in every scene—whether he is offering *rusk* to Patha in the restroom, interacting with him while visibly frightened, or eventually revealing his inner truth to him.

He is a strong contender for a National Award. Sai Abhyankar’s background score touches the heart, perfectly complementing the direction, screenplay, and performances of the cast. The technical aspects, including cinematography and visual composition, are excellent.

**Plus Points:** Vijay Sethupathi and the young boy Sai; the performances of the cast; background score; storyline, screenplay, and direction; the core message; cinematography. **Minus Points:** Nothing significant. **Overall:** A good film that goes beyond the ordinary.
